About Menorca

Poppies, common in Menorca

The enchanting, seductive and spectacularly beautiful island of Menorca has a tranquil charm and peaceful way of life that will captivate all those that seek a holiday where the emphasis is on resting, relaxing and enjoying a lifestyle virtually forgotten in the modern world.

Apart from its breathtaking scenery and secluded beaches there is a quiescence about Menorca that makes it perhaps the most captivating of all the islands in the Mediterranean. It is the least commercialized of the Balearic Islands and retains much of its original character and atmosphere due to the careful, sensitive and sympathetic expansion of its tourist industry. From its renowned pine fringed and breathtakingly beautiful beaches (Menorca has more beaches that all the other Balearic islands put together) to the winding streets and market squares of the bustling centre of its capital, Menorca has something for everyone.

'The Jewel of the Mediterranean'

A traditional Menorcan building

Once described by Lord Nelson as "the Jewel of the Mediterranean" Menorca today is very much as Nelson would have remembered it and not surprising that the Menorquines call it 'La isla de suenos' (The island of dreams) for one visit will convince you that the islanders are not exaggerating.

Menorca in the spring

The verdant flora, exotic fauna and unparalleled beauty of this island is regarded by the European Community to be of such importance that the entire island has been declared a Biosphere (nature reserve), the only one in the entire Mediterranean area.

A Menorcan terrace

For the Menorquines there are two things in life that transcend all others, fiestas and horses and the two come together throughout the summer with their spectacular Saint's days fiestas, each town having its own and each town taking its turn, so weekend after weekend there will singing and dancing in the streets, parades of giants, bands playing in tiny squares and of course, the famous jaleo, a truly spellbinding spectacle where horse riders of all ages ride their stallions through the streets inspired by the roar of the crowds and the music of the bands. It is an absolute 'must see' and an authentic taste of old Spain.

Captivating

An old tree

Whether it’s the wealth of magnificent soft, sandy beaches, undiscovered coves and pine scented woods or the elegance and magic of the old Mediaeval capital of Ciutadella and the cosmopolitan shops, café-bars and squares fringed with lemon trees of the capital Mahon, Menorca will keep you captivated and enraptured. A place where, given a little imagination, time seems to stand still and you will want to return time and time again.
